How do I get started with my custom printing business?

A print-on-demand business—when you sell your custom designs on various types of products—can be a good business option for someone with a knack for design who doesn’t want to carry inventory.

Start with a Business Plan

A few of the things you may want to include are:

  • How you price your products

  • Your target demographic

  • Costs associated with licensing and certification

  • Your monthly budget and break-even rate

  • Your business objectives and goals

Choose Your Niche

Create a list of all the things you like. A few possible ideas include comics, fashion, football, healthy living, etc. It should be specific enough to attract core customers, but also a broad audience. Check out Google Trends and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Reddit to see if people are chatting up your idea. Also, take a tour on Amazon, eBay or any other popular online marketplace to find out if your print-on-demand product idea is already being sold on the market. Don’t worry if someone is already selling it; it could be a sign that it’s a good product to sell!

Choose Your Product(s)

A few popular print-on-demand product ideas include mugs, t-shirts, posters, phone cases, hoodies, stickers, hats and pillows. Even though there is a wide variety of choices, stick to your market needs to make sure that your designs will be printed products that make sense for your niche.

Create Your Designs

To create your products, you’ll have to craft your designs or modify copyright-free designs, such as those from Creative Market. It’s unprofessional and illegal to copy and paste someone else’s work without permission. If you don’t have time to make your product designs or the skills, you can purchase excellent designs at a reasonable price from places like Upwork, Fiverr, Design Pickle and many more.

Choose a Supplier

To bring your visions to life, you will need to work with a print-on-demand supplier. Many suppliers—Printful, Gooten, Printify, Print Aura and Inkthreadable—have plugins that integrate directly with most major eCommerce platforms like Shopify so you can connect your store directly to your supplier to make order-handling easier.

Promoting your business

  • Website. Having a professional website is necessary to promote your home care business. Make sure to include testimonials from satisfied clients and a list of the services you provide and your pricing.

  • Social media. Advertising on Facebook is very inexpensive and lets you customize the people who will see your ads. It’s also a good idea to have active social media sites for your business and post frequently.

  • Networking. Reach out to friends, business associates, and family and ask them to promote your services to their associates and friends.

  • Referrals. Consider asking doctors, senior centers, and other community groups for referrals or if they will let you place a brochure or flyer about your business in their waiting room, on a notice board, or at the reception desk.

  • Brochures or flyers. Have simple, but professional brochures or flyers made to distribute to potential clients.

Business licenses or special permits

Check local business rules and regulations to see if you need any licensing.
